Students of the Hebrew University come from a variety of backgrounds differentiated by nationality, religion, religious observance, ethnicity, and culture. Given that the future leadership of Israel is trained within its campuses, The Hebrew University sees as its responsibility to provide an open, accepting, and pluralistic campus environment where members of different socio-cultural and religious groups can come to know and respect one another on equal footing while carrying on with their studies; a campus in which all students, faculty, and staff feel that they belong.

The Center for the Study of Multiculturalism and Diversity will explore these issues on both an academic and practical level.  Academically, the Center investigates the relationship between national and religious identity and civic identity, between majority and minority and between multiculturalism and shared society. Practically, the Center serves as an advocate for multiculturalism on campus, providing a comfortable space within the University for students and faculty members, and staff of all backgrounds to meet, study, work and socialize together while being exposed in a very real sense to the concept of diversity as life enhancing.
